Rainer Kriester (1975)

Rainer Kriester (born June 12, 1935 in Plauen ; † May 14, 2002 in Vendone , Italy ) was a German painter and sculptor .

life and work

After studying medicine, Kriester left the former GDR in 1958 . He started in 1961 at the Berlin School of Art a study in the subjects of painting and sculpture.

Since 1970, however, Kriester worked more as a sculptor. He had his first major exhibition in the same year. A large part of his work at the time dealt with abstract heads, which are predominantly shaped by spikes and nails and which he also referred to as steles or head signs .

From 1982 Kriester lived and worked in Albenga , a place in Liguria , alternating with Berlin. For the sculptures created there, he used the porous, dull white to slightly pink limestone that had grown on the spot . A sculpture Large White Head Sign (1984–87) made from this material is in the Chancellery in Berlin. The artist kept to the found shape of the stone block and only worked on its surface.

Kriester was buried in Vendone, Italy . In Vendone (Due Torri), between Alassio and Albenga , north of Capo Lena, a sculpture park with around 35 works was designed by him.

Rainer Kriester was a member of the German Association of Artists .
