The Beelden aan Zee Museum in Scheveningen was founded in 1994 and exhibits modern sculptures from the period after the Second World War . Exhibitions changing three times a year show works of art by international artists. Since 2003 a research institute for modern sculpture, the Sculptuur Instituut, has existed in the same building .
The museum building was built by the architect Wim Quist . Since the building regulations stipulated that the building must not protrude above the height of the dyke , the house was largely built underground and illuminated through ceiling windows.
Works by the American sculptor Tom Otterness have been freely accessible on the open space above the museum since 2004 . These SprookjesBeelden aan Zee are particularly aimed at young museum visitors.
In 2011 the museum was a partner of the Blickachsen 8 exhibition in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe .
