The Luganersee or Lago di Lugano , also Ceresio (an Italianization of the Latin name Ceresius ), or German outdated Lauisersee (after the former German name Lauis for Lugano), is one of the northern Italian lakes .
location
63% of the lake is in the Swiss canton of Ticino . 37% of the lake area is in Italian territory. It is named after the Swiss city of Lugano . Its surface is 271 m above sea level and measures 48.8 km² , of which 30.7 km² belong to Switzerland and 18.1 km² to Italy. Its deepest point is 288 m and its volume is 5.9 km³ . The most important inflow is the Vedeggio with 4 m³ / s.
Its shape is explained by its formation after the Ice Age in an area where two glaciers met. The artificial lake dam of Melide divides the lake into a north and south basin. The north basin has an area of 27.5 km², the south basin 20.3 km², plus the small basin, called Laghetto (German, “small lake”), of Ponte Tresa with 1.0 km².
Some of the foothills of the lake extend to Italy, and the Italian exclave Campione d'Italia, known for its casino , is located on its shore, which leads to a complicated borderline . South of Lugano, the motorway and railway line cross the lake on the Melide dam.
tourism
Well-known panoramic mountains on the shore are the Monte Brè ( 925 m above sea level ) in the east, the Monte San Salvatore ( 912 m above sea level ) in the west of Lugano and the Monte Generoso ( 1701 m above sea level ) on the southeastern bank . Between the two southern arms lying UNESCO - World Heritage Monte San Giorgio ( 1097 m above sea level. ).
Since the lake is located on the southern tip of Switzerland in a Mediterranean climate, it is a popular tourist destination.
Various German composers have withdrawn around the lake, such as Michael Jary , Martin Böttcher or Peter Thomas . The writer Hermann Hesse lived in Montagnola near Lugano from the age of 42 until his death . In his honor there has been a museum dedicated to him in the old Torre Camuzzi since 1997.

- ↑ The etymology of the Latin name is unknown. Suggested base words are Latin cerasus 'cherry tree'; an ancient place name Ceresius, which is supposed to mean 'sky blue', or allegedly Celtic keresius, which means 'branched out'.
