The Mara is a 9.4 kilometer long tributary of Lake Lugano in the Swiss canton of Ticino and in the Italian province of Como in Lombardy . It flows through the Valle Mara and drains an area of 14.6 square kilometers. After thunderstorms and rain, the level of the torrent can rise quickly.

course

The Mara rises on Sighignola directly on the state border near Lanzo d'Intelvi . It flows eastwards first, only to make an arc to the southwest a little later. It now flows through a narrow, densely forested gorge, crosses the state border and touches the village of Arogno . Above Maroggia the gorge opens up again and after flowing through the village center of Maroggia the Mara flows into Lake Lugano.
