Carpoforo Tencalla , also Tencala (born September 10, 1623 in Bissone , † March 9, 1685 ibid) was an Italian-Swiss painter .

Life

According to the painter and art historian Joachim von Sandrart , who knew him personally, the son of an architect received his training in Milan , Bergamo and Verona . From this period there are figural ceiling paintings in the Palazzo des Marchese Terzi in Bergamo, as well as paintings in a chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore and the altarpiece in the chapel Santa Maria delle Grazie in the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Lugano .

Ceiling painting in Passau Cathedral

Tencalla was first recorded in Austria by Sandrart in 1659, when he created the wall frescoes in the presbytery of the collegiate church of Stift Lambach , while Sandrart was responsible for the ceiling frescos.

On February 5, 1665 he wrote a letter in Bissone to the church leaders of Madonna di Santa Giacomo in Bergamo and agreed to take over the job for the work there. Then he carried out the ceiling paintings above the altar.

In 1667 he stayed in Vienna and painted a room in the Hofburg , in 1669 he painted in the sacristy of Heiligenkreuz Abbey . Both works have not been preserved. In 1670 he signed wall paintings of mythological content in the gallery room of Trautenfels Castle . Tencalla, court painter to Empress Eleonore , was again active in the Hofburg until 1673 . In 1676 he created the ceiling paintings for the Dominican Church in Vienna .

In 1674, in the service of Bishop Karl II of Liechtenstein-Kastelkorn, he painted the ceiling of the large hall of the residence in Olomouc, as well as numerous other depictions, all of which were lost due to a fire in 1750 and the subsequent reconstruction of the castle. A fire in 1752 destroyed his later paintings in Kremsier Castle .

On June 17, 1682, Tencalla signed the contract for the execution of frescoes in the choir, dome and two side chapels in the cathedral of Passau . On October 27, 1684, the order was extended, but Tencalla died before the side chapels were painted. His son-in-law Carlo Antonio Bussi completed this work.
