Arosio is part of the Ticino Alto Malcantone municipality , in the Breno district in the Lugano district and is located in the upper Malcantone .

geography

Arosio consists of two separate settlements Terra di sopra and Terra di sotto and is predominantly a residential community. The Roman road from Ponte Tresa to Monte Ceneri through the municipality has been handed down.

history

The discovery of a large number of Roman coins speaks for the tradition that a Roman road from Ponte Tresa TI and Novaggio up to Arosio and from there down to Monte Ceneri is said to have led. Earlier forms of the name are Arosium, Aloxio, Aroxio, Roseo. Rosio. The village is mentioned for the first time in 1180; In 1217 the church of Santa Maria in Como owned land here, as did the monastery of Sant'Abbondio in Como. The Bishop of Como had the chestnut tithe, which was bought back in the early 19th century. Under the Duke of Milan , Arosio had to add 30 men to the army in the first half of the 15th century. Arosio used to belong to the Agno TI parish , but it is not known when it broke away from it. In 1571 it already formed a sub-parish, but on September 30, 1599, Arosio demanded the complete separation from Agno.

Community merger

Arosio merged on March 13, 2005 with the former municipalities of Breno, Fescoggia, Mugena and Vezio to form the new municipality of Alto Malcantone.
