Novaggio is a municipality in the Breno district, in the Malcantone region , in the Lugano district of the canton of Ticino in Switzerland .

geography

The village is at 640 m above sea level. M. in Malcantone and in the middle of vineyards and old chestnut groves, charmingly located, 13 km northwest of the Lugano station of the Swiss Federal Railways .

history

The village is first mentioned in a document as Novizio in 1335. The project to merge the municipality with the neighboring towns of Astano , Bedigliora , Curio , Miglieglia to form the new municipality of Medio Malcantone was dropped in 2004 after negative votes in the municipalities.

In 1922 the Swiss Federal Military Insurance opened a sanatorium for military men with tuberculosis in Novaggio. In 1952 the sanatorium was converted into a hospital for the treatment of internal diseases and joint and back problems. From 1989 to 1997 the military hospital was expanded into a special clinic for the rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal system, which is also open to civilian patients.
