Breno ( Bren in Ticino dialect) is a village in the municipality of Alto Malcantone , Canton Ticino . It is one of the few villages in Ticino that still largely looks the same as in the 19th century.

geography

The village is located in the upper Malcantone at 802 m above sea level. M. on the right bank of the Magliasina , on the Agno - Mugena road .

history

The village was first mentioned in 1140 as Breno . Since the 11th century, the Archbishop of Milan and the Abbey of St. Abbondio of Como owned rights and land there. Those of the abbey formed a castalderia and were usually given as fiefs to the community; this resulted in disputes between the two parties in the 12th and 13th centuries. In 1579 the rights and property of the abbey were bought back by the vicinanza . Vezio and Fescoggia seem to have previously belonged to the municipality of Breno, but in 1473 these two municipalities were already independent. In the 16th century Breno had to provide 16 soldiers to the Duke of Milan. A castle is mentioned there in 1516.

The former municipality of Breno merged on March 13, 2005 with Arosio , Fescoggia , Mugena and Vezio to form the new political municipality Alto Malcantone .
