Fescoggia ( Fescògia in Ticino dialect) is a district of the Ticino community Alto Malcantone in Malcantone .

geography

The village is located in the Val Magliasina between Breno and Vezio , on a terrace (837 m above sea level) below Monte Torri.

History and economy

The village is first mentioned as Foschagiora in the 11th century; other early mentions are Fiscoza (1250); Fescozia and Fiscozia (both 1296) and Fischozia (1467). According to a document from 1296, Fescoggia was, besides Agnuzzo, the only village in southern Ticino that was wholly owned by the cathedral chapter of Como . The tithe right was owned by the monastery of Sant'Abbondio in Como, which sold this right to the Vicinia (neighborhood) Breno in 1579.

Agriculture was always dominant, but iron ore was also mined and smelted on Monte Torri in the 19th century . In 2000, more than four fifths of the employed people living in the former municipality were commuters.

Fescoggia merged on March 13, 2005 with the former municipalities of Breno , Arosio , Mugena and Vezio to form the new municipality of Alto Malcantone.
