Gian Alfonso Oldelli

Gian Alfonso Oldelli OFMCap (born August 6, 1733 in Mendrisio , † March 5, 1821 in Lugano ) was a Swiss Capuchin , university professor and local researcher.

Life

Gian Alfonso Oldelli was the son of the plasterer Giovan Antonio Oldelli (born April 4, 1691 in Meride ; † after March 7, 1758) and his wife Anna, daughter of the plasterer Santino Busi (1664-1736).

He had his novitiate in the monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Lugano; then he entered the order of the Friars Minor .

He was lecturer in theology in Como , Varese and Milan . From 1788 to 1791 he was Guardian of the Monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli; In 1793 he was also Guardian of the Santa Chiara Monastery in Naples for another three years . In 1815 he became General Commissioner of the Reformate Province of Insubria and remained so until his death.

Act

Gian Alfonso Oldelli was not only a penitential preacher , but also dealt with theology and history and was one of the most famous pulpit speakers in Italian-speaking Switzerland in his time , who also preached in northern and central Italy and in Vienna .

His lexicon of the famous men of the canton of Ticino , Dizionario storico ragionato degli uomini illustri del Canton Ticino , which he published in 1807 with an addendum from 1811, still serves as an important biographical reference work today.

Honors

In Mendrisio, the street Via Gian Alfonso Oldelli was named after him in his honor.
