Girolamo Ruggia
Girolamo Ruggia SJ (born September 30, 1748 in Morcote , † May 29, 1823 in Bologna ) was a Swiss Jesuit and university teacher.
Life
Girolamo Ruggia was the son of Giovanni Antonio Ruggia and his wife Elisabetta Sardi.
He studied at the University of Venice and the University of Rome and then taught humanistic subjects in Ascoli . After the Jesuit order was abolished in 1773, he moved to the Veneto as a private tutor and later taught rhetoric at the pre-university educational institution for aristocrats , the Collegio dei Nobili in Parma .
From 1816 he held the chair for spiritual eloquence, eloquenza sacra, at the University of Bologna and held lectures there until his death.
Writing
For the most part, his oeuvre comprised religious and secular poems, most of which are contained in his two-volume work Poesie dell'abate Girolamo Ruggia , along with the tragedy Demetrio . In addition, he wrote speeches, the short epic La coltura del cuore , cantata texts and dramatic seals. He published his writings almost exclusively in Parma and Bologna.
His text Pianto d'Armonia sulla morte d'Orfeo , written in 1808, was set as a cantata by Gioacchino Rossini , who was a student at the Liceo Musicale in Bologna at the time .
