Walter Layton, 1st Baron Layton
Walter Thomas Layton, 1st Baron Layton , CH , CBE (born March 15, 1884 London , † February 14, 1966 London) was a British newspaper publisher and economist .
Life
Layton attended King's College School and Westminster School , then studied at University College London and Trinity College , Cambridge . He taught economics at the latter college before moving to Gonville and Caius College .
During the First World War Layton worked in the Ministry of Munitions. From 1922 to 1938 he was editor of The Economist , and later from 1944 to 1963 managing director of The Economist Newspaper Ltd.
Layton was chairman of the committee of experts named after him , which was supposed to find solutions for restoring German credit after the banking crisis . His report is regarded as the beginning of the end of the German reparations . During the Second World War he worked in the Ministry of Supply and the Ministry of Production .
From 1949 to 1957 Layton was Vice President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe .
Family and honors
Layton married Eleanor Dorothea Osmaston in 1910, with whom he had seven children.
After he had been promoted to Knight Bachelor in 1930 , he was awarded the title of Baron Layton in 1947 .
Layton died in 1966 and the barony passed to his eldest son.
