Michael (Mike) E. Brown (born June 5, 1965 in Huntsville , Alabama ) is an American astronomer known for the discovery of the dwarf planet Eris and the related reclassification of Pluto as a dwarf planet, about which he also wrote a book .

Life

Mike Brown studied at Princeton University until his Bachelor of Arts in 1987 . He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1990 and completed his PhD in 1994. In 1997 he went to the California Institute of Technology as a lecturer . He teaches at Berkeley as an associate professor from 2002 and as a professor from 2003.

Brown has been married to Diane Binney since March 1, 2003, and his daughter was born in 2005.

Brown is primarily concerned with the spectroscopy of objects in the outer solar system and was involved in the discovery of several large trans-Neptunian objects , e.g. B. (50000) Quaoar (2002), (84719) 2002 VR 128 (2002), (90377) Sedna (2003), (90482) Orcus (2003), (136199) Eris (2003) and (136472) Makemake (2005 ).

Sedna is possibly the first known object of the inner Oort cloud . The dwarf planet Eris is considered to be the second largest known object in the Kuiper Belt , just after Pluto . In a publication in January 2016, he described the possible existence of a previously undiscovered large planet in the outer solar system, tentatively called Planet Nine .
