Franz Oberwinkler

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Oberwinkler (born May 22, 1939 in Bad Reichenhall ; † March 15, 2018 in Tübingen ) was a German mycologist and botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Oberw. "

Career

Oberwinkler studied biology, chemistry and geography at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He was a student of Josef Poelt and Hermann Merxmüller and received his doctorate in 1965 with a dissertation on lower Basidiomycetes . Then he was a scientific assistant at the chair of special botany and pharmacognosy at the University of Tübingen until 1967. From 1967 to 1972 he worked in the same position at the Institute for Systematic Botany at the University of Munich, where he completed his habilitation in 1972 and taught as a private lecturer until the beginning of 1974. From 1968 to 1969 he was Scientific Expert of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations at the Instituto Forestal Latino-Americano in Mérida , Venezuela.

In 1974 he was appointed to the chair for special botany and mycology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen as the successor to Karl Mägdefrau and was also director of the Botanical Garden of the University of Tübingen from 1974 to 2008 . Oberwinkler retired in 2008. Lists of his publications can be found at Google Scholar Citations, ResearchGate and Web of Science.

From 1977 to 1979 Oberwinkler was 1st chairman of the German Society for Mycology , for which he proposed this designation. However, the company's international journal, Mycological Progress, could not appear until 2002 and was editor-in-chief until 2016. In 1979 and 1993 he was Dean of the Faculty of Biology at the University of Tübingen. From 1994 to 1998 he was President of the International Mycological Association (IMA) and from 1996 to 1998 President of the Association of Botanical Gardens . He was a member of the Plant Sciences Expert Committee of the German Research Foundation from 2008 to 2011.

Research areas

Oberwinkler's research focused on the micromorphology and ultrastructure of fungi, especially Basidiomycota (stand mushrooms) and their interactions with plants. This resulted in work on systematics, evolution and ecology, with special consideration of mycorrhizae (fungus-tree root associations) and Basidiolichenes (lichens of the Basidiomycota). In 1985, the botany chairs at the University of Tübingen were granted the cooperation project "Mushroom-tree-root symbioses" in the state research funding program. In 1991 they were able to implement a coordinated research and teaching concept within the framework of the DFG-funded graduate school "Organismic Interactions in Forest Ecosystems", whose spokesperson was Oberwinkler.

He was particularly interested in the development of fungi and their coevolution with plants, especially rust fungi and relatives ( Pucciniomycotina ), smut fungi ( Microbotryomycetes and Ustilaginomycotina ), Sebacinales and Tulasnellales . Another extensive field was the study of mycoparasites of the Basidiomycota. In addition, Oberwinkler supervised work on the systematics and phylogeny of agaric species such as Amanita , Cortinarius and Tricholoma .

Awards

Oberwinkler had been an external member of the Norwegian Academy of Sciences since 1995 . In 1997 he became a Centennial fellow of the British Mycological Society, 2005 Honorary member of the Mycological Society of America and 2013 IMA fellow. In 2010 he was awarded the de Bary medal by the IMA.

The mushroom genera Oberwinkleria and Oberwinklerozyma were named in his honor . Further eponyms are Amanita oberwinklerana , Lobatiriccardia oberwinkleri , Nematococcous oberwinkleri , Rhizocarpon oberwinkleri , Sphaerobasidioscypha oberwinkleri , Thecaphora oberwinkleri and Uromyces oberwinklerianus .
