The Microbotryomycetes are a class of the mushroom (Basidiomycota).
Features and way of life
The Microbotryomycetes are a morphologically and ecologically very diverse group. The spore formation ranges from basidia , which are formed by individual teliospores , to scattered basidia, to complex, pycnidia-like fruiting bodies. The majority of the species is dimorphic, so has two growth forms. The yeast form occurs in the haploid phase. All sexual species ( teleomorphs ) form phragmobasidia , with the exception of curvibasidium .
Many species have organelles in their cells called colacosomes, which are related to the fungal parasitic way of life of these species. They are membrane-bound and connect the hyphae of the parasite with those of the host.
The class includes fungal and plant parasites, and possibly saprobionts . Fungal parasitism is viewed within the class as the original way of life from which plant parasitism evolved. The occurrence of saprobionts is not certain, as the saprobiontic way of life was only observed in culture.
