life and work

Ferrazzi, like his brother Riccardo , was introduced to the study of ancient painting by his father, the sculptor and copyist Stanislao Ferrazzi . From 1904 he continued his training with Francesco Bergamini , a student of Michele Cammarano . Between 1906 and 1908 he studied at the Scuola Libera del Nudo of the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma and attended evening courses at the Accademia di Francia . In 1908 he won a scholarship from the Istituto Catel . This enabled him to continue his training with the landscape painter Max Roeder , who introduced him to the circle of German artists in Rome.

As early as 1907 Ferrazzi took a self-portrait at the LXXVII. Esposizione della Società degli amatori e cultori di belle arti di Roma . He was represented at the Biennale di Venezia in 1910 with another self-portrait influenced by Roeder . The painting Focolare from 1911 , with which he participated in the Esposizione internazionale di Roma , was bought by the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna . In 1912 he won the Concuso Baruzzi in Bologna with the sketch for the painting Il presagio , which he completed the following year. With the painting Genitrice he took part in the first international art exhibition of the Roman Secession in 1913.

In 1914 he attended the second exhibition of futurist painters in the Galleria Sproveri , and in the following period he developed themes of futurism, especially movement and dynamics, in his works. At the invitation of the art collector Walter Minnich , he went to Montreux in 1916. He lived in Switzerland for a year and in 1917 exhibited five works (including Carosello alla Riponne ) in a group exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zürich . In 1919 he was represented at the Grande Esposizione nazionale futurista in Milan, Florence and Genoa.

In 1920 the painting Ospedale was exhibited at the Venice Biennale and the Exposition Internationale d'art moderne in Geneva. In 1921 Ferrazzi had a solo exhibition in the Casa d'arte italiana in Rome , directed by Enrico Prampolini and Mario Recchi . In 1922 he married Horitia, daughter of the sculptor and ceramicist Francesco Randone . At the second Romana Biennale , Ferrazzi had a solo exhibition with 26 works, including the sculptures Contemplazione and La finestra . The art collectors Herta and Arturo Ottolenghi bought the watercolor L'adoloscente during a visit to the exhibition the following year and published a portrait that Ferrazzi completed in 1923 ( Ritratto di Herta con il figlio Astolfo ).

In June 1925 he was appointed a member of the Accademia di San Luca . Ferrazzi was represented with Young lady in an exhibition at the Lefevre Galleries in London, in 1926 he participated with nine new works (including Idolo del prisma and Viaggio tragico ) at the Exhibition of modern Italian art in the Grand Central Art Gallery in New York and with Prismatic Vision participated in the Pittsburgh Carnegie Award . With Horatio e Fabiola he won First Prize at the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh . At the exhibition "Italian Painters" at the Kunsthaus Zürich in 1927 , nine of his more recent paintings were exhibited alongside works by Calo Carrà , Matio Sironi , Achille Funi , Mario Tozzi and Alberto Salietti .

After a trip to Cuba, he took part in the first exhibition of the fascist artists' association Lazio in 1929 as an exhibitor and juror (also in 1936 and 1943). From August of that year he taught decorative painting at the Accademia di belle arti di Roma . In 1930 he sent three paintings to the Mostra del Novecento italiano in Buenos Aires. In 1931 he worked on preparatory studies for the decoration of the Mausoleo Otolenghi and created the Fresco Madonna de la nascite for the Villa Cardarelli in Premeno. In 1933 he was elected a member of the Reale Accademia d'Italia .

For the facade of the Annunziata church in Sabaudia, Ferrazzi created the mosaic L'Annunciozione in 1934 , and in the same year he took part in the Venice Biennale with a collection of paintings. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 he won a prize with Esercitazioni ai Parioli . He presented encaustic paintings at the Venice Biennale in 1938 . As a protagonist of wall painting, he created wall works for numerous public buildings in the 1930s, despite various censorship measures, including the Trionfo de la terra for the town hall of Pomezia, which was destroyed in the war, and L'aurora and La scuola for the Sala Galilei of the University of Padua .

In 1943 Ferrazzi's first major retrospective took place in the Galleria di Rome . During the war years he created works such as Apocalisse and La stanza , which reflected the horrors of the time and with which he opened a personal exhibition in the gallery of the Art Club in Rome in 1946 . Even after the war he took part in international exhibitions (including the Milan and Venice Biennials) and continued to produce murals for public buildings. In the early 1960s he created a monumental group of stone sculptures, including the bas-relief Teatro della Vita . In 1966 he became artistic director of the Vatican Mosaic School and performed the mosaic of the Church of Sant'Antonio in Taranto with his students from 1968 to 1971 .
