Gottfried Hammerich

Gottfried Hammerich OPraem (* around 1630 in Dittwar near Tauberbischofsheim ; † March 15, 1710 ) was the 40th abbot of the Oberzell monastery .

Life

Gottfried Hammerich was born in Dittwar around 1630. At the age of 17, Hammerich went to Würzburg to study at the University of Würzburg . After his studies, Hammerich took his religious vows with the Premonstratensians in the Oberzell monastery near Würzburg. His profession was in 1651, four years later Gottfried was ordained a priest (1653 Mag. Phil., Lic. Theol., Dr. theol. After 1655).

When in 1669 children in his home village found two figures, Maria and Johannes, in an oak tree while collecting wood, Gottfried Hammerich became a great sponsor of the pilgrimage to the Kreuzhölzle in Dittwar. He then donated the funds for the construction of a cruciform chapel to the Dittwar parish of St. Laurentius .

Gottfried Hammerich was pastor in Gaukönigshofen , prior in Oberzell, provost of the women's monastery in Unterzell 1673–1692. Provost Gottfried carried out his duties in Unterzell so praiseworthy that after 19 years, on October 9, 1692, his brothers in office raised him to the 40th Abbot of Oberzell (election on October 9, 1692). The now over 60-year-old started his new job with great energy. Lively construction activity began. Hammerich had the two side walls of the church broken through, extensions built, columns attached and the church stuccoed. In the west, the church was given a new facade in 1696. On this side a double coat of arms was attached above the portal. In addition to the monastery coat of arms, Hammerich's coat of arms, a talking coat of arms, is still clearly recognizable: an arm with a hammer in its hand. 1697 Abbot Godfrey was General to the approximate Rien Westphalia, Ilfeld and Wadegotien (Wade streets) 1696. He initiated the Baroque style of Obernzeller monastery church. In addition to these tasks, which gave Hammerich a top position among the Abbots of the Premonstratensians, he was heavily stressed by the legal disputes over the Premonstratensian monastery in Gerlachsheim . The Prince-Bishop of Würzburg , Friedrich von Wirsberg , had closed this monastery in 1563 and took over the administration of the property. From 1699, Abbot Gottfried Hammerich led a persistent process to return this monastery to Oberzell, which was championed by all instances at the emperor and the pope. However, Abbot Gottfried could no longer experience the success of his efforts, because it was not until 1717, i.e. seven years after Hammerich's death, that the Gerlachsheim monastery could be incorporated again into the Oberzell Abbey. Gottfried Hammerich was buried in a special place of honor in the choir of the monastery church in Oberzell in 1710.

The coat of arms on the monastery church

The personal coat of arms of Abbot Hammerich has been preserved on several objects from the history of the former monastery. Description : A right-turned arm with a hammer in hand. The tinging of the coat of arms is unclear. The coat of arms is on the facade of the Oberzeller monastery church, which was rebuilt under Abbot Hammerich. There is also a plan of the monastery from 1669 on which the coat of arms was immortalized.
