Lorenz Hetzer

Lorenz Hetzer (real name Georg Hetzer , also Lorenz Hezer ; * around 1628 in Volkach ; † September 11, 1692 ) was abbot of the Premonstratensian monastery of Oberzell in Zell am Main from 1688 to 1692 .

Oberzell before Hetzer

In the first half of the 17th century, the abbey got into conflict in the Thirty Years War . Between 1631 and 1634, the abbot Leonhard Frank even had to leave the monastery because the Protestant Swedes had occupied the nearby city of Würzburg . Under Hetzer's predecessor Gottfried Bischof, attempts were made to repair the war damage. The monastery economy was promoted and a study center was founded in Würzburg.

Life

Lorenz Hetzer was born as Georg Hetzer in the Lower Franconian town of Volkach. He was probably born there around 1628. The sources are silent about the family of the future abbot. The school education is also in the dark. Hetzer left his hometown in Würzburg at the local university to take a theology degree. There he earned a doctorate in theology with the highest praise .

When the abbot Gottfried Bischof died in September 1688, a new election was necessary, which took place on November 4, 1688 and from which the sixty-year-old Lorenz Hetzer emerged as abbot. During his term of office one tried to standardize the taxes of the monastery villages and to consolidate the finances of the abbey. So a splendid fief book was completed on February 22nd, 1689, in which the possessions of Oberzell were collected. Abbot Lorenz died on September 11, 1692.
