Bernhard of Constance
Bernhard von Konstanz , also: Bernhard der Sachse and Bernhard von Hildesheim , (* in Saxony ; † March 15, 1088 probably in Corvey ) was a cathedral scholaster and publicist.
Life
Bernhard von Konstanz, a born Saxon , was considered a scholar with a comprehensive classical and canonical education. In 1049 he became head of the cathedral school in Constance . In 1072 he was appointed head of the cathedral school in Hildesheim by the Bishop of Hildesheim, Hezilo von Hildesheim . After 1085 he entered a Saxon monastery, probably in Corvey near Höxter .
Bernhard's teacher was a student of Adalbert von Konstanz . Bernold von Konstanz was one of his students. Together they exchanged letters with Pope Gregory VII regarding the Roman Synod of Lent of 1076 .
Bernhard was a supporter of Pope Gregory VII and thus a resolute opponent of King Heinrich IV. During the investiture controversy, Bernhard von Konstanz is considered to be the author of the pamphlet "Liber canonum contra Henricum IV." Against King Henry IV, which is called bishop when it is first published Altmann von Passau has attributed.
He is considered to be the author of the "Fundatio ecclesiæ Hildensemensis" from 1075 , which deals with the establishment of the diocese of Hildesheim .
