Bernold of Constance
Bernold von Konstanz , also: Bernold von St. Blasien or Bernoldus Constantiensis , (* around 1050; † September 16, 1100 in the monastery of Allerheiligen , Schaffhausen ) was a Benedictine and an important high medieval historian .
Life
Bernold was educated at the Constance Cathedral School by Bernhard von Konstanz . In 1079 he took part in the Roman Synod of Lent and in 1084 was ordained a priest in Constance by the then Cardinal Otto von Ostia, who later became Pope Urban II (1088-1099) .
Bernold, who had to move to the monastery of St. Blasien as a Benedictine monastery in 1086 and who spent the last years of his life in the Schaffhausen monastery of All Saints, became known for his early scholastic canonical writings, including against the Nicolaitans and Simonists, and on the hierarchy of ecclesiastical legal sources. Bernold's best-known work is his world chronicle from the creation to the year 1100, an important (and autograph handed down) source for the German southwest at the time of the investiture dispute (1075–1122). He also wrote the Micrologus de ecclesiasticis observationibus , in which he described elements of the contemporary liturgy (originated between 1086 and 1090).
The Gregorian reforms had one of their most important followers in Bernold von Konstanz.
