Jean Regnault de Segrais
Jean Regnault de Segrais , also Jean Renaud de Segrais , (born August 22, 1624 in Caen , † March 15, 1701 ), was a French poet.
Life
Because of his spirit, De Segrais was recommended to Anne Marie Louise d'Orléans as secret secretary and had to correct and publish her writings. Then he entered into a similar relationship with Marie-Madeleine de La Fayette , in whose works he is said to have been involved and to whom Zaïde (1669) and La princesse de Clèves (1678) were at times ascribed. He was held in high regard by François de La Rochefoucauld and Madame de Sévigné .
Since 1662 he was a member of the Académie française ( seat 6 ). In 1676 he retired to Caen where he died in 1701 after re-establishing the academy there. He gained great fame for his eclogues and pastorals , in which he expressed tender and natural feelings in a clever, elegant way; he was considered here to be the successor of Racan .
