Antonio Rodrigo Betancort Barrera (born March 13, 1937 in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria , † March 15, 2015 ibid) was a Spanish football player .

Career

society

Betancort began his career at his hometown club UD Las Palmas and made his debut on February 3, 1957 in a 2-2 draw against RCD Español in the Primera División . In his first four seasons in professional football he was in the shadow of goalkeeper Pepín , who left the club after relegation in the 1959/60 season and moved to Betis Sevilla . Then Betancort rose in the second division season 1960/61 to the goalkeeper and played 23 league games. Although he missed the direct return to fifth place with his club, his performance had aroused the interest of numerous first division clubs. For the 1961/62 season he then moved to Real Madrid in the Spanish capital .

In Madrid he did not receive any operating times in his first season, so he agreed to a loan deal with the first division competitor Deportivo La Coruña in the 1962/63 season . For the Galicians, he played 24 league games. The club rose at the end of the season, however, in the Segunda División . For the 1963-64 season returned Betancort back to Real Madrid. On April 19, 1964, he made his debut for Los Blancos in the Primera División. It was his only use this season. In the 1964/65 season he finally prevailed against his rival José Araquistáin and celebrated his breakthrough as a regular goalkeeper for the Madrilenians: He played 34 competitive games, including five games in the European Cup for the first time , and won the championship title with Real Madrid at the end of the season as well as best goalkeeper of the season the Trofeo Zamora . Through his achievements, Betancort earned the full confidence of coach Miguel Muñoz : In the 1965/66 season he was used in all 30 league games and celebrated the sixth win of the European Cup with Real Madrid . In the semi-final first leg of this competition Betancort played what was perhaps the most memorable game of his career against Inter Milan : After seriously injuring himself early in the game, he decided to stay in goal until the end, as substitutions were not yet allowed at the time and Real Otherwise Madrid would have had to finish the game with ten. Despite his handicap, he did not concede a goal against star players such as Luis Suárez , Joaquín Peiró , Mario Corso or Sandro Mazzola and thus contributed significantly to the 1-0 victory, which meant qualifying for the final after a 1-1 second leg. Betancort missed both the semi- final second leg and the final victory due to the injury.

While the finals for the 1966 World Cup were lost against Peñarol , Betancort won the championship three more times and the Trofeo Zamora again with Real Madrid in the 1966/67 , 1967/68 and 1968/69 seasons . In 1967/68, however, he lost his regular place to the young Andrés Junquera , but was once again in the cup final . After he was able to push Junquera out of the gate again in the 1968/69 season, he then played only 13 league games in two seasons.

For the 1971/72 season Betancort therefore decided to return to UD Las Palmas . There he was again a regular player in the first year. He completed all 34 league matches and qualified with his club for the 1972/73 UEFA Cup . In his second season he played eight other league games. After the 1973/74 season , in which he was no longer used, Betancort ended his career at the age of 36.

National team

Betancort played two international matches for the Spanish national team . He made his debut on October 27, 1965 in the World Cup qualifier against Ireland . His second and last use was on November 10 of the same year again against Ireland. He then took part in the 1966 World Cup in England, but José Ángel Iribar was the goalkeeper of the Spaniards.
