Richard Kay "Dick" Wildung (born August 16, 1921 in Anoka , Minnesota , † March 15, 2006 in Minneapolis , Minnesota) was an American American football player. He played among other things as an offensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL) with the Green Bay Packers .

Player career

College career

Richard Wildung was born in Anoka and grew up in Luverne , where he also attended high school. After graduating from school, he studied at the University of Minnesota , for their college football team , the Minnesota Golden Gophers , he played from 1940 to 1942 as an offensive tackle. In 1940 and 1941 he and his team won the national college championship. In 1941 and 1942 he was elected All-American . In 1942 he was team captain MVP of his team, he also played in the East-West Shrine Game , a selection game with the best college football players of the year. His college honored him from 1940 to 1942 for his athletic achievements.

Professional career

In 1943, Dick Wildung was selected eighth in the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers in the first round . Before he could continue his playing career, he was drafted into the US Navy and served as a lieutenant on a PT boat in the Pacific during World War II . It was only in 1946 that he was able to join the Green Bay team trained by Curly Lambeau . In Green Bay he was active until 1953, where he had to suspend the 1952 season due to his military service in the Korean War . Richard Wildung could never achieve a championship title with the Green Bay Packers. Wildung died in 2006 and is buried in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Honors

Dick Wildung played in a Pro Bowl and was voted All-Pro three times . Wildung is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame .
