Friedrich of Saxony (1504–1539)
Friedrich von Sachsen (born March 15, 1504 in Dresden ; † February 26, 1539 there ) had been the Hereditary Prince of the Duchy of Saxony from the Albertine line of the Wettins since 1537 .
Life
Friedrich was the younger son of Duke George of Saxony (1471–1539), from his marriage to Barbara (1478–1534), daughter of King Casimir IV of Poland .
Friedrich was mentally handicapped and became the Hereditary Prince of Saxony after the death of his older brother Johann . Declared by his father to be entitled to succession, he was married on January 27, 1539 in Dresden to the Catholic Elisabeth (approx. 1516–1541), daughter of Count Ernst II of Mansfeld-Vorderort and sister of Peter Ernst I of Mansfeld . Friedrich died just four weeks after the marriage without leaving any children, on the very day on which his father had planned the hereditary homage for him, which was to take place during his lifetime. Friedrich's father had hoped in vain for the results of the supplement that had taken place: “ He hoped that his obedient dear son would have left so many more seeds behind him that his country might have a ruling lord. ”
Friedrich was buried in the Princely Chapel of the Meissen Cathedral , his father Georg had still tried to marry his widow to his nephew Moritz , but this venture failed because of the veto of Moritz's father Heinrich the Pious .
George the Bearded died shortly after his son Friedrich. Despite his sons, he had no heir. Thus initially the rule of Catholic princes over the Duchy of Saxony ended , which fell to George's Lutheran brother Heinrich the Pious.
