Evaristo Baschenis
Evaristo Baschenis (born December 4, 1617 in Bergamo , Italy ; † March 15, 1677 ibid) was an Italian baroque painter who, as a highly specialized painter , devoted himself almost exclusively to the representation of stringed instruments. The nearby Cremona , a famous center of violin and lute making , provided the models. In contrast to Dutch painting, Baschenis does not have so much an allegorical and admonishing sense - musical instruments were often used there as symbols of the sense of hearing, and the fleetingness of the tones reminded one of transience - the Italian's emphasis is more on decorative and aesthetic aspects, which follows from the peculiar elaboration of the painterly and ornamental qualities of the instruments.
