Georg Ludwig Collins (born March 15, 1763 in Königsberg , † January 15, 1814 in Riga ) was a German Protestant clergyman.

Life

Georg Ludwig Collins was born as the son of the negociate Edgar Collins (born October 17, 1705 in Königsberg; † July 11, 1780 ibid), who was also the church leader of the Reformed Protestant community in Königsberg and his second wife Marianne Florentine (born June 5, 1735 in Königsberg; † December 8, 1785 ibid), a daughter of Johann Heinrich Kiesewetter, court and city ​​councilor , born. His brother was Johann David Collins (1761–1833), pastor of the German Reformed Congregation in St. Petersburg from 1790 to 1810 , and married Charlotte Anna Wilhelmine (1773–1831), a daughter of Johann Albrecht Euler (1734–1800).

He attended the Reformed Parochial School (mainly devoted to the education of clergy, later to public education) in Königsberg and from 1779, due to the loss of his father's property, stayed with relatives in Riga, where he received a four-year apprenticeship in the silk shop EF Groot. This was followed by a visit to the Lyceum and from 1784 to 1785 he studied theology at the University of Königsberg and heard lectures from Immanuel Kant ; He continued his studies from 1785 to 1787 at the University of Leipzig , where he heard lectures from, among others, Georg Joachim Zollikofer . After completing his studies, he initially worked as court master for the English merchant James Renny in Riga; there he became a preacher in the Protestant Reformed community in 1788.

In 1813 he received his doctorate as Dr. phil. at the University of Dorpat .

He was in Riga since January 21, 1789 with Gertruda Dorothea (* March 25, 1771 in Riga; † January 17, 1836 ibid), a daughter of Anton von Bulmerincq (February 24, 1724 in Riga; † July 18, 1791 ibid.) ) married; together they had sixteen children.

Freemasons

Georg Ludwig Collins belonged to the Freemasons while he was preparing to study theology at the Lodge de la Fidélité for unity in Riga , where he was a speaker and curator.

He was a speaker in the Lodge zum Schwert and is listed in the membership register of December 31, 1791 as an honorary member of this Lodge. In March 1792 he was elected Master of the Chair as Moeller's successor, but in 1792 he laid down the hammer again, followed by Michailov, from whom he took over the office of Johanni in 1793 and the office until the lodge closed in March 1794 held.

He was also the Grand Master of the Scottish Chapter of the Lodge on the Small World .
