Jürgen Walther Herrmann Schweinbraden Freiherr von Wichmann-Eichhorn (born March 15, 1938 in Dresden ) is a gallery owner and publicist .

Life

Schweinbraden, who studied psychology and industrial sociology after completing his apprenticeship as a car mechanic , first took up teaching activities in East Berlin .

In 1974 he founded the residential and alternative gallery EP Galerie Jürgen Schweinbraden in East Berlin's Dunckerstraße 17 and organized 70 exhibitions, including AR Penck , and 50 concerts until 1980 . In doing so, he introduced the East German audience to products from Western art such as mail art , conceptual art , performance and video . In 1979 he was given several administrative fines. In 1980 criminal proceedings for the production of illegal printed matter followed , and in November of the same year he moved to the Federal Republic of Germany .

The alternative gallery he founded became a model for similar models in several large cities in the GDR and was a cornerstone for the development of an alternative art scene in the GDR as a counterpart to the party art propagated by the SED .

Since then he has worked at the Nationalgalerie in Berlin and documenta 8 in Kassel. Schweinbraden was director of the Hamburger Kunstverein from 1989 to 1992 . He lives as a freelance exhibition maker, publicist and publisher in Niedenstein (Hesse).

On December 10, 2007, large parts of the A. R. Penck collection from Jürgen Schweinbraden were purchased by the city of Dresden. Today they are in the possession of the Dresden City Gallery , supplemented by an extensive donation from the collector . In total, the gallery was able to add around 40 paintings, objects and assemblages, 330 watercolors and drawings, 340 overpaintings, 80 graphic prints and over 100 works from the circle of the artist group " Lücke ", in which AR Penck played a key role.

Schweinbraden had married Barbara Freifrau von Wichmann-Eichhorn in the 1970s and adopted her name.
