Lily Garáfulic
Lily Garáfulic Yancovic (born May 14, 1914 in Antofagasta , † March 15, 2012 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean sculptor. The daughter of Croatian immigrants studied from 1934 at the Escuela de Bellas Artes of the Universidad de Chile with Hernán Gazmuri . In addition, she took part in Lorenzo Domínguez's sculpture course, became his best student and, from 1937, assistant. In 1938 she traveled to Europe, where she met Jules Breton and Constantin Brancusi . As a Guggenheim scholarship holder , she was a student of José de Creeft at the New York School of Social Research from 1944–45 and learned in the graphic workshop Atelier 17 with William Hayter . In 1946 she created the 16 prophets for the Basilica of Our Lady of Lourdes in Santiago de Chile . In 1947 she studied mosaic technology in Ravenna as a scholarship holder of the Universidad de Chile.
In the same year she became a lecturer at the Facultad de Artes of the Universidad de Chile. From 1951 until her retirement in 1997 she was a professor at the chair for sculpture. Her students included Sergio Castillo , Matías Vial , Raúl Valdivieso , Wilma Hannig , Alfredo Portales and Francisco Gazitúa . In 1957 she was appointed representative of Chile in the Asociación Internacional de Artes Plásticas of UNESCO . From 1973 to 1977 she was the director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , whose restoration laboratory she set up.
Garáfulic had numerous solo exhibitions (including at the Instituto de Arte Contemporáneo , Lima, 1966 and at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo , Santiago, 1969). Her works can be found in the collections of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , the Museo Histórico Nacional , the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo and the Museo de Artes Visuales . In 1995 she was awarded the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas together with Rebeca Matte and Marta Colvin . The Universidad de Talca received 65 works from the artist's estate in 2013 and set up the Sala Lily Garafulic in 2015 .
