William Hayter

William Goodenough Hayter , KCMG (born August 1, 1906 in Oxford , † March 28, 1995 ) was a British diplomat who was ambassador to the Soviet Union between 1953 and 1957 . In addition, he acted between 1958 and 1976 as overseer (Warden) and thus as head of the New College of the University of Oxford .

Life

William Goodenough Hayter, son of the judge of the same name Sir William Goodenough Hayter and his wife Alethea Slessor, was the older brother of the writers Priscilla Napier and Alethea Hayter and a cousin of the Marshal of the Royal Air Force John Slessor , who served as Chief of the 1950-1952 the Air Staff was Chief of Staff of the Royal Air Force (RAF). After attending the renowned Winchester College, founded in 1382, he himself completed an undergraduate degree at the New College of the University of Oxford . For his services, he became Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in 1948 . After his retirement from the diplomatic service, Sir William Hayter was the successor of the philosopher Alic Halford Smith Overseer (Warden) and thus head of the New College of the University of Oxford in 1958 and held this position until his replacement by Arthur Hafford Cooke in 1976. He was then awarded the title of Honorary Fellow of New College.
