Shiga Mitsuko

Shiga Mitsuko ( Japanese 四 賀 光子 , civil: Ōta Mitsu ( 太 田 み つ ); born April 21, 1885 in Nagano Prefecture ; † March 23, 1976 ) was a Japanese writer.

Shiga initially worked as a teacher. During this time she met the poet Ōta Mizuho and began to write tanka verses herself. From 1906 she studied at the girls' normal school in Tokyo (today: Ochanomizu Women's University ). After completing her studies, she married Ōta in 1910.

She taught at a girls' school and worked for the Tanka magazine Chōon ( 潮音 ), which Ōta founded in 1915. After Ōta’s death in 1955, she and her son Ōta Seikyu took over the publication of the magazine. From 1957 to 1965 she was also responsible for selecting poems for the New Year's reading at the Imperial Court.

In addition to several volumes of poetry, u. a. Fuji no Mi ( 藤 の 実 ), Asa Tsuki ( 朝 月 ), Asa Ginu ( 麻 ぎ ぬ ), Shiga also published literary works such as Waka Dokuhon ( 和 歌 読 本 ) and Dentō to Gendai Waka ( 伝 統 と 現代 和 歌 ), as well as the essay volume Kamakura Zakki ( 鎌倉 雑 記 ).
