Vilmos Győry

Vilmos Győry (born January 7, 1838 in Raab , † April 14, 1885 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian writer and translator.

Gyory studied in Pest and Berlin theology , he became in 1862 a Protestant pastor in Orosháza and 1877 in Budapest.

He wrote excellent short stories and pamphlets for young people and acquired an outstanding position in Hungarian literature, especially through his perfectly formed translations. In 1867 he won a prize with his translation of the Frithjofssage into Hungarian. Calderon's La vida es sueño and Moreto's El Desdén con el Desdén were performed in Győry's translations at the Pest National Theater.

For the Shakespeare edition of the Kisfaludy Society , of which he was a member, he provided the translation of All's Well , All Well , and on behalf of that society he translated Cervantes ' Don Quixote . Most recently he published a volume: By Swedish poets (1882), as well as Spanish romances, among others. Győry was also a member of the Hungarian Academy .
