Vinçenc Kolë Prennushi
Vinçenc Kolë Prennushi OFM (born September 4, 1885 in Shkodra , † March 19, 1949 in Durrës ) was Catholic Archbishop of Durrës in Albania . He died in a communist regime prison as a result of torture.
Life
Vinçenc Kolë Prennushi came from a middle-class Catholic family. His parents had him baptized in the name of Nikolaus ( Albanian : Kolë ). After attending the Catholic high school in his hometown, he entered the Franciscan monastery of Troshan at a very young age in 1900 . Prennushi studied theology in Shkodra and at the theological faculty of Salzburg . He made his perpetual profession in Salzburg in 1904 and was ordained a priest in Innsbruck on March 19, 1908 .
On January 27, 1936, Prennushi was by Pope Pius XI. appointed Bishop of Sapa . He was ordained episcopal by the Apostolic Delegate in Albania, Archbishop Giovanni Battista della Pietra SJ , on March 19 of the same year.
On June 26, 1940, Pope Pius XII appointed him . as Archbishop of Durrës , he became the successor to Bishop Pjetër Gjura, who died in 1939.
In May 1947, the Communists, now ruling in Albania , arrested Prennushi and sentenced him to 20 years in prison for collaborating with foreign enemies of Albania. The real reason, however, was that the archbishop had refused to participate in the founding of an Albanian national church separate from Rome. With the establishment of such a church, the regime wanted to gain full control over the Albanian Catholics in the late 1940s.
Prennushi was often tortured in prison. He died of the consequences and the poor prison conditions in March 1949. His grave is in St. Lucia's Cathedral in Durrës.

The Albanian dioceses have asked the Holy See for the beatification of the martyr . The beatification of Archbishop Vincenç Kolë Prennushi and other 37 martyrs took the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , Angelo Amato , on November 5, 2016 by order of Pope Francis in Shkodra before.
