It extends along the lower reaches of the Drin south of the city of Shkodra . The bishopric is in Vau-Deja in Shkodra County .

history

Sapa hill, former seat of the diocese

The diocese is named after Sapa ( Italian Sappa ), a former town south of Vau-Deja, where the cathedral of the diocese, the Michael's Church, was for a long time. From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, Sapa was part of the ecclesiastical province of Antivari .

In the 17th century the small north Albanian dioceses could only be occupied with bishops with difficulty due to the advancing Islamization by the Ottomans and often remained vacant. Therefore the diocese of Sarda (Sardoniki) was defeated in Sapa in the 17th century. At that time the united diocese had two important bishops, Pjetër Budi (1621–1622) and Frang Bardhi (1637–1643). They were among the first to write religious works in Albanian .

The Bishop of Sapa Gjergj Volaj , who came to office in 1940 , was imprisoned, tortured and murdered in February 1948 by members of the Sigurimi after the Second World War . No new bishop could be appointed under the tyranny of the communists.

Pope John Paul II re- established the diocese in the 1990s. In the spring of 2002, some Albanian Carmelites moved from Croatia to Nënshat near Sapa and founded a contemplative monastery there . From the beginning of 2007, Lucjan Avgustini, who died in May 2016, held the office of bishop.
