Ande combined his academic knowledge and his historical and geographical interests in his cultural work, in the context of local research . From 1930, Ande was the first honorary director of the Rinteln City Archive, whose unusually rich holdings he secured, organized and scientifically processed. On the occasion of the propagandistic staging of the 700th anniversary of the town of Rinteln, Ande, who was also chairman of the beautification association and district commissioner for culture, effectively staged the town museum with a first extensive publication by the Heimatbund . With the beginning of the Second World War he was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1939 . After being injured and ill, he returned to Rinteln in 1943 and, as the director of studies at the grammar school, was also obliged to serve as captain and site commander of the medical company in the hospital town of Rinteln. Ande also worked there as a district culture warden and National Socialist command officer.

During the fighting for Rinteln at the beginning of April 1945, he campaigned with the German combat commandant for the release of two detained American parliamentarians who had been sent to Rinteln by the 5th Armored Division of the US Army for handover negotiations. The American side had previously threatened to bomb the city. Adventitious higher NS - party officials and SS officers arrested changes following his attempt at mediation "because of cowardice." Shot in unknown circumstances, Ande's body was later found in Garbsen near Hanover . He was buried on May 16, 1945 in the Reformed Cemetery in Rinteln.

Friedrich-Wilhelm Ande is considered to be the savior of Rinteln, who prevented the city from being destroyed by the approaching Americans. The city honored him in May 1953 with the erection of the Ande monument on Ande-Platz of the same name and with the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Ande-Straße named after him.
