Alexander Grundner-Culemann (also Alexander Culemann ; born September 28, 1885 in Braunschweig ; † July 16, 1981 ) was a German forester and politician . He worked mainly in Goslar , initially as the city forest manager and from 1952 to 1958 as the city's mayor .

Live and act

Alexander Culemann came from an old forest family in Brunswick. After the early death of his father, Chief Forester A. Culemann, he was adopted by his uncle August Friedrich Julius Grundner , who at the time was a forest master and councilor in Braunschweig. Since then he has called himself Alexander Grundner-Culemann. From 1895 to 1904 he attended high school in Wolfenbüttel , where he also passed the Abitur. This was immediately followed by a forestry apprenticeship at the Stiege State Forestry Office in the Harz Mountains and then studying forest sciences at the Universities of Munich and Giessen and at the Royal Prussian Forest Academy in Hann. Münden . After the legal clerkship exam in 1910, he returned to his home country for his legal clerkship , which he completed in 1913 with the assessor exam .

The First World War then interrupted his further professional career, which he was only able to pursue after completing his military service as a reserve officer - Alexander Grundner-Culemann was awarded the Iron Cross First Class . From 1918 he began his time as assessor in the Brunswick civil service as an employee of the forest management institute . But as early as 1921 the city of Goslar transferred the management of its city forest office to him, which he then managed until 1952. Like his predecessor Carl Reuss was also Grundner-Culemann of extra-economic importance of the time 3,000 hectares large municipal forest deliberately and promoted the use of the relaxation and adventure for tourism . He developed the urban forest to the preferred tourist center of the Northern Harz by expanding the forest path network in an exemplary manner, setting up benches and building shelters and other recreational facilities. For reasons of forest aesthetics , he had mixed woods brought into the otherwise pure spruce stands, but as an old-school forester he otherwise represented a decidedly conservative forest management. However, it is thanks to his economic approach that all times of crisis and imposed logging during his term of office were not able to impair the structure of the urban forest reserves and thus sustainable forest management was always guaranteed.
