Emil Artur Longen (1912)

Emil Artur Longen , actually Emil Artur Pittermann (born July 29, 1885 in Pardubitz , Bohemia , Austria-Hungary ; died October 9, 1936 in Beneschau , Czechoslovakia ) was a Czech director, screenwriter, dramaturge, writer, painter and actor.

Life

Emil Artur Longen attended high school in Beneschau , joined a traveling theater at the age of fifteen and left his parents' house for good at sixteen. Longen later studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague , from which he was expelled in 1908 for disobedience.

In 1906 he appeared together with Eduard Bass in the first Prague cabaret. In 1907 he participated together with Otakar Kubín , Emil Filla and Bohumil Kubišta in the establishment and the first public exhibition of the Osma painter group .

In 1910 he married the actress Polyxena Marková (1891–1928).

Since 1910 he has appeared with his cabaret program on the stages of the Lucerna, Montmartre , Červená sedma and Rokoko theaters , but has also made a name for himself in Paris and Berlin . In 1913 he founded his own touring cabaret, in which he appeared with his wife and a couple who were friends. After financial failure, he went to Berlin and Trieste and performed successfully on the theaters there.

In 1918 Longen worked in the National Theater in Slovenia, among other things as a director. After his return to Prague he went back to Červená sedma (Red Seven) under the direction of Eduard Bass . In 1920 he founded the cabaret BUM in Prague, in which famous Prague comedians such as Ferenc Futurista , Vlasta Burian , Eman Fiala , Saša Rašilov , Josef Rovenský and Karel Noll performed. His second mainstay was the Revoluční scéna (Revolutionary Stage), in which he performed the good soldier Schwejk of his friend Jaroslav Hašek on the stage for the first time .

In 1922 both projects failed. Longen went to Germany and became director of the Wilden Bühne in Berlin, then moved to Brno and shortly afterwards to the Prague Rococo. Here began a long and fruitful collaboration with Vlasta Burian, which lasted until 1934. After the first sound films were made, he appeared in 1931 as the main actor in the spy drama Aféra plukovníka Redla . In the 1930s, comedies with Vlasta Burian were written by Longen. In addition, he edited memoirs about his wife and wrote articles about theater life for various magazines and feature pages.

Longen was known for its wild and free life.

Osma

In the spring of 1907 Emil Fila founded the expressionist artist group called Osma (The Eight). This group consisted of the eight young Czech artists: Vincenc Beneš , Bedřich Feigl , Max Horb , Otakar Kubín, Bohumil Kubišta , Willi Nowak , Emil Artur Pittermann , Antonín Procházka (and Linka Scheithauerová-Procházková) and based on the expressiveness of Edvard Munch , but found little approval in Prague because it did not seem to unite with the traditional realism. Difficult living conditions meant that the group split up relatively soon. From about 1911 onwards, some of the artists found themselves in a new group of artists called Tvrdošíjní , which was already more oriented towards Cubism .
