Josef Rovenský (born April 17, 1894 in Prague ; † November 5, 1937 there ) was a Czech actor , screenwriter and director .

Life

Josef Rovenský grew up in a wealthy family in Prague, as his father ran a funeral home there . After a private acting training with Karel Želenský, he first became a member of a small touring theater company in 1914 . In 1918 a first stage position followed at the City Theater in Pilsen . He then returned to Prague and played at various cabaret and cabaret stages (including Red Seven, Rococo, Vlasta Burian Theater and the Revolutionary Scene).

Josef Rovenský came into contact with the film business as early as 1914 and appeared in a silent film . From 1918 he was increasingly seen in film productions , later also in some German films directed by his compatriot Karel Lamač . In 1929 he played the leading role of the pharmacist Robert Henning in the GWPabst film Diary of a Lost . Louise Brooks , Fritz Rasp and Valeska Gert played next to him . In the 1930s he increasingly turned to directing. Among his notable works were the film Junge Liebe (Řeka) with Jarmila Beránková and Jaroslav Vojta in 1933 and Marysa with Jirina Stepnicková and Jaroslav Vojta in 1935 . In 1936 he directed the Austrian production Manja Valewska with Maria Andergast , Olga Chekhowa and Hans Schott-Schöbinger . The critics judge this feature film , which had the distribution title Petersburger Romance in the post-war period :

"Love melodrama from 19th century Russia: splendid uniforms, dashing officers, shiny balls. [...] Hopelessly outdated noble colportage."

While working on the German feature film Pan in 1937 . The fate of Lieutenant Thomas Glahn , for which he also wrote the script , led to differences with the production company. At the same time, Josef Rovenský was struggling with health problems, so he stopped filming and returned to Prague. The film was subsequently shot and finished by Olaf Fjord . Rovenský also worked as a screenwriter for other films.

Josef Rovenský died in 1937 at the age of 43.
