action

The actor Ivan Kristen and his wife Soňa leave the theater in the Bohemian province to take an engagement in Prague . Soňa Kristenová owes her artistic career to her husband, but due to a decision by the theater director Eduard Warren, Ivan Kristen, unlike his wife, initially remains without a role. Soňa Kristenová becomes a star, to whom advances are made by her fellow actor Richard Kent. Kristens sees himself and his acting talent overlooked and urges him and his wife to leave the theater. Kent, interested in Soňa's remaining at the theater, puts in a good word for Kristen, whereupon Kristen finally gets a role.

In order to prepare for the play in the best possible way, Kristen studies different types of people in the pub. The actor meets a pickpocket named Ferda Štika. Kristen offers to steal the letter Soňa wrote to Kent. Štika manages to gain access to Kent's apartment, while Kristen observes what is going on from the hotel across the street. An exchange of fire ensues, whereupon Kristen is suspected and goes into hiding. Štika drowns while trying to escape in the Vltava . As a result, Kristen becomes addicted to alcohol. One day Kristen visits Kent in his apartment. He learns that Soňa had said goodbye to Kent in a letter because she could not leave her husband. At this moment Soňa unexpectedly comes into the apartment, Kristen hides behind a curtain on the balcony, from where he falls into the street and has a fatal accident. Soňa and Kent leave the apartment, their car making its way between the onlookers who have gathered around Kristen's body.

criticism

Martin Beheim-Schwarzbach writes in the Film-Journal of October 13, 1929: “There are films that are made completely in silence, one day they will be there, and lo and behold, they have the calm, self-evident nature of the excellent. These SINS OF LOVE belong to these, for which we only want to think away the ugly, conventional and not even suitable title, as the only dissonance. Everything else is first class. "

The Austrian film newspaper of September 7, 1929 writes: "The [...] shown film" The Last Mask "is one of those works which, through the interaction of direction and representation in connection with a first-class, interesting subject, exert that infallible effect, which captures the visitor and lets him take an active part in what is happening in front of him. "

Paimann's film lists were more critical : “The subject of 'Welker Laurel' with a criminal element, despite a certain breadth, worked continuously, carefully staged and consistently presented very well. The presentation is not big, but just like the photography it is appropriate. - Overall qualification: good medium film. "
