Willi Nowak (born October 3, 1886 in Mníšek pod Brdy , † October 20, 1977 in Prague ) was a Czech painter, lithographer and university lecturer. He had German ancestors.

Life

Nowak studied from 1903 to 1906 at the Academy of Fine Arts with Franz Thiele in Prague, then in Berlin, Munich and the Netherlands. He settled in Prague as a figure, portrait and landscape painter and also worked as a lithographer. In the spring of 1907 Emil Filla founded the expressionist artist group called Osma (The Eight). In addition to Filla and Nowak, seven young Czech artists were members of the group: Vincenc Beneš , Bedřich Feigl , Max Horb , Otakar Kubín , Bohumil Kubišta , Emil Artur Pittermann , Antonín Procházka . At times Linka Scheithauerová-Procházková was one of them. The group was based on the expressiveness of Edvard Munch and existed until 1911. In 1910 Nowak published a series of lithographs with the title Idyllen . In 1915 he worked in Munich, later in Liebnitz, Berlin and Seeham near Salzburg. In 1924 he made illustrations for Hugo von Hofmannsthal's libretto Ariadne auf Naxos . From 1929 to 1939 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and a founding member of the Prague Secession . He was also an employee of the magazine Die Aktion .

Around 1924 he married Elena Däubler (born April 11, 1880 in Trieste, † September 1935 in Prague), the sister of the writer Theodor Däubler , who was married to his painter friend Otto Th. W. Stein .

Nowak was buried in the Vyšehrad cemetery in Prague.
