Franz Thiele

Franz Thiele (born March 9, 1868 in Friedland in Bohemia ; † May 23, 1945 in Prague ) was a German painter who worked in Vienna and Prague.

Life

Thanks to the support of Count Clam-Gallas's family , Thiele studied painting from 1884 to 1892 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under August Eisenmenger , Franz Rumpler and Christian Griepenkerl . In 1892 he was awarded the Rome Prize and spent a year in Italy. He then visited Spain, France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany. In 1902 he was appointed associate professor, in 1905 full professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague . From 1916 to 1917 he served as a volunteer and worked as a war painter on many fronts . In 1927 he married the painter Inge geb. Peschka (1903-1993). From 1896 to 1900 he was a member of the cooperative of the visual artists Vienna (Künstlerhaus) and 1900 to 1912 a member of the Hagenbund .

In 1938 Thiele retired. After the annexation of the Czech Republic in 1938, he created a propaganda picture depicting Hitler in front of a cheering crowd. After the war he was sent to an internment camp , where he died.

His works were mainly history paintings, landscape, genre and animal studies as well as portraits, but he was also active as a sculptor.

  • 1918: Awarded the title of Hofrat
