Julio Ortiz de Zárate Pinto (born April 12, 1885 in Santiago de Chile ; died June 13, 1946 there ) was a Chilean painter and sculptor .

Life

Zárate entered the Escuela de Minas in Santiago in 1899 and also took painting lessons from Pedro Lira . He later studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes with Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor and, like all his students, was part of the painters group of the Generación del Trece .

At the same time he joined the Colonia Tolstoyana , a group of young intellectuals around Augusto D'Halmar , Fernando Santiván and Manuel Magallanes Moure . In 1916 he became a member of the Grupo de los Diez , who u. a. Pedro Prado , Juan Francisco González , Manuel Magallanes Moure, Armando Donoso , Augusto d'Halmar and Julio Bertrand Vidal .

On his first trip to Europe in 1919, he visited Spain, France and Belgium. He discovered the work of Paul Cézanne and met Pablo Picasso , Joan Miró and Amedeo Modigliani in Paris. After his return to Chile he founded the Grupo Montparnasse in the capital with artists such as Henriette Petit , Luis Vargas Rosas and José Perotti .

In 1926 Zárate was appointed a member of the Comisión de Bellas Artes of Santiago. He traveled through Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil and in 1927 became a professor at the Escuela de Bellas Artes . In 1928 he presented a concept for the establishment of a school for applied arts. At this Escuela de Artes Aplicadas he became professor of metal art in 1934. From 1939 until his death in 1946 he was director of the Museo de Bellas Artes .

In 1948 a retrospective of his works took place in Santiago, and in 1956 an exhibition of his oil paintings and sculptures in the exhibition hall of the Universidad de Chile . Zárate's works are u. a. owned by the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and the art gallery of the Universidad de Concepción . His brother Manuel Ortiz de Zárate was also known as a painter.
