William Huntington Russell
William Huntington Russell (born August 12, 1809 , † May 19, 1885 ) was an American doctor and, together with Alphonso Taft, founder of the Yale secret society Skull & Bones .
Russel came from a family that had gained power and prosperity through the opium trade in the Empire of China . In 1831/32 he studied in Germany at a time when the ideas of the philosopher Hegel were finding their way into the education system. Upon his return in 1832, Russell founded the secret society Skull & Bones with 13 other Yale graduates .
He married Marry Hubbard in 1836. Russel earned a doctorate in medicine and later directed the Collegiate and Commercial Institute in New Haven , home of Yale University. The aim of the institute was “to offer young people security from a young age and to give them a sound education in the English style as early as possible.” This should serve as a basis for the most accurate preparation possible for their later college career and the business to offer.
