Christian Johann Heinrich Schmidt
Christian Johann Heinrich Schmidt (born November 20, 1810 in Hamburg , † October 18, 1885 in Leipzig ) was a German train driver . He went down in railway history as the first Saxon locomotive driver.
Life
Schmidt was born on November 20, 1810 in Hamburg. In 1834 he moved to Dresden as a locksmith's journeyman . There he worked from 1837 and 1841 under Johann Andreas Schubert in the Maschinenbau-Aktiengesellschaft founded in 1836 on the locomotives Saxonia and Columbus .
Schmidt was a train driver from October 1, 1840, and on January 22, 1841, he was appointed the first permanent train driver of the Leipzig-Dresden Railway Company .
Schmidt retired on August 1, 1875 after 34 years of service. He died in Leipzig on October 10, 1885. One of his eleven children, Heinrich Schmidt, also became a train driver.
