Wilhelm Dunker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wilhelm Bernhard Rudolph Hadrian Dunker (born February 21, 1809 in Eschwege ; † March 13, 1885 in Marburg ) was a German geologist , paleontologist and zoologist .

Life

Wilhelm Dunker studied mining and metallurgy in Göttingen from 1830 to 1834 and after completing his studies initially worked as an intern at the Bergamt zu Obernkirchen. Soon thereafter, he was appointed to teach mineralogical sciences at the newly founded polytechnic school (Höhere Gewerbeschule) in Kassel . In 1853 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . In 1854 he was appointed professor at the University of Marburg , where he taught until his death.

But Dunker was best known as one of the most important malacologists of his time. He had a very extensive private collection of snails and mussels, which he was constantly expanding by exchanging (and probably buying) with other collectors. He maintained contacts with his contemporaries Rudolph Amandus Philippi , Karl Ludwig Pfeiffer , Hugh Cuming and Johannes Albers . He also acquired numerous original copies and types of these authors through exchange . After his death, Dunker's mollusc collection was bought by the Prussian state and, at the instigation of the curator Eduard von Martens, was included in the collections of the then Zoological Museum Berlin , where it is still located today.

Wilhelm Dunker wrote a large number of scientific publications on the systematics of molluscs and described numerous new species. In 1846 he founded the magazine “ Palaeontographica ” together with Hermann von Meyer , which was published by both and is still published today.

He also dealt with paleontology, among other things he found the tooth of a predatory dinosaur in the coal mining of Obernkirchen , which was then described by the Berlin paleontologists Wilhelm Dames and Ernst Koken and named after Dunker ( Megalosaurus dunkeri). Dunker himself published about his dinosaur finds in the program of the Higher Trade School Kassel 1843/44 and in the monograph of the North German Wealden education in 1846.
