Lithophaga is a genus of medium-sized mussels from the family of mussels (Mytilidae). You drill in hard, calcareous substrates.

features

The cases are usually elongated and narrow, with more or less parallel or slightly backward converging dorsal and ventral edges. The edges of the case are smooth. The vertebra sits near the front end. The cases are about 3 to 7 cm long. The surface is largely smooth with more or less distinct growth stripes, or with vertical stripes. The external ligament is sunk deeply. The color varies from light brown to dark brown, almost black. The lock edge is generally smooth.

Geographical distribution and way of life

The species of the genus occur worldwide in warmer seas. With the help of a pallial gland secretion, the animals drill into stone or live or dead corals, hence the scientific name Lithophaga , which means "stone eater".

Taxonomy and systematics

The taxon Lithophaga was established by Peter Friedrich Röding as early as 1798 . Type species is Mytilus lithophaga Linné, 1758.
