Tor Julius Efraim Andræ ( pronunciation : [ ˌtuːɹ anˈdɹeː ], born July 9, 1885 in the parish of Vena, Kalmar län ; † February 24, 1947 in Linköping ) was a Swedish religious historian and Lutheran bishop of Linköping .

life and work

Tor Andræ came from a pastor's family and studied theology at Uppsala University , where he received his doctorate in 1917 and then worked as a lecturer. In 1927 he became professor of religious history at Stockholm University . Two years later he was appointed to Uppsala University. In 1936 he was briefly Minister of Education in the Axel Pehrsson-Bramstorp cabinet . In the same year he was appointed Bishop of Linköping. He held this office until his death.

Andræ was a student of Nathan Söderblom , as his successor he was accepted into the Svenska Academies in 1932 . In 1935 he was also elected to the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets Academies . As a religious historian, he was particularly interested in the early history of Islam , in particular its Jewish and Christian roots, Islamic mysticism and religious psychology in general. His book on Mohammed , published in the first edition in 1930, is considered a standard work; it was translated into several languages ​​(German in 1932) and reprinted into the 21st century.

Andræ has been awarded honorary doctorates by four universities ( Dorpat and Halle 1932, Strasbourg 1935, Oslo 1935).
