Axel Alarik Pehrsson-Bramstorp (born August 19, 1883 in Öja , Ystad municipality , † February 19, 1954 in Lilla Isie , Trelleborg municipality ) was a Swedish politician and Prime Minister of Sweden .

Family and career

Pehrsson was the son of a farmer. In 1937 he added the name of the Bramstorp farm he had acquired to his family name. After his father died in 1897, he had to leave school to help on the farm. Only later was he able to expand his education by taking evening courses at a community college ( Folkhögskola ). Due to his success as a farmer, he was able to acquire several farms in later years.

Political career

Member of the Reichstag and party chairman

Pehrsson began his political career in 1912 when he was elected a member of the Provincial Parliament ( Landsting ) in Malmöhus County . In 1918 he was elected a member of the Second Chamber of the Reichstag , where he represented the liberal Liberal Liberal Association ( Frisinnade Landsföreningen ) until his election defeat in 1921 .

He then joined the farmers' union ( Bondeförbundet ) founded in 1913 , which he represented from 1929 to 1949 as a member of the Second Chamber. Pehrsson was from 1934 to 1949 chairman of the farmers' union.

After the resignation of the social democratic government of Prime Minister Per Albin Hansson after a vote defeat in the Reichstag, he was appointed Prime Minister by King Gustav V on June 19, 1936 . At the same time he took over the office of Minister of Agriculture. After the failure of a non- socialist coalition government, he had to lead a minority government based only on the farmers' union. He had to resign as early as September 28, 1936 after the Reichstag election. Because of the short term in office, his reign was also referred to as the «summer vacation government» ( semester rain rings ).

His successor as Prime Minister, again Per Albin Hansson, formed a coalition government made up of the Social Democratic Workers 'Party and the Farmers' Union. Hansson appointed Pehrsson as Minister of Agriculture. He also retained this office in the collection government formed by Hansson after the outbreak of World War II on December 13, 1939, until July 31, 1945.

After his resignation as Minister of Agriculture, he remained chairman of the farmers' union and member of the Reichstag and also took over the chairmanship of the national agricultural union until he had to give up these offices after a brain hemorrhage in 1949.

For his services to Swedish politics, he was awarded the Royal Order of Seraphines in 1949 , the highest order in Sweden.
