Knut Hjalmar Leonard Hammarskjöld (born February 4, 1862 in Tuna , Småland , † October 12, 1953 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish lawyer and politician .

life and career

After his legal exam in 1884, Hammarskjöld first worked as a notary at Svea hovrätt . In 1886 he became a lecturer, in 1891 associate professor of private law at Uppsala University . In addition, he held multiple legal offices at national and international level. In December 1901 he became Minister of Justice in the Fredrik von Otter government , with which he resigned on July 5, 1902. He now took over the chairmanship of the Göta hovrätt , served briefly in 1905 as minister of the church and then as envoy in Copenhagen. From 1907 to 1930 he served as Landshövding in Uppsala län , but was often released for other tasks.

From February 17, 1914 to March 30, 1917, he led a bipartisan government as Prime Minister . Because of the refusal to sign a trade deal with Great Britain, he lost support in the Reichstag and had to submit his resignation. From 1923 to 1938 he was an independent member of the Reichstag. From 1929 to 1947 he was chairman of the Nobel Foundation .

He was married to Agnes Almquist since 1890 and has four children, Bo , Åke , Sten and Dag Hammarskjöld .

Honors

Hammarskjöld was admitted to the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala in 1908 , to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1913 and to the Swedish Academy in 1918 (Chair No. 17). Uppsala University awarded him an honorary doctorate in law in 1893 and an honorary doctorate in 1927 . He also received numerous orders from Sweden and other countries, including the North Star Order (most recently in 1915 as Commander with Grand Cross), the Seraphine Order (Commander 1916), the Dannebrogorden (Grand Cross 1907), the Prussian Red Eagle Order 1st Class (1911) and the Order of Saint Olav (last Grand Cross 1916).
