Political career

Minister and Prime Minister 1905

On July 5, 1902, Prime Minister Erik Gustaf Boström appointed him Minister without Portfolio. As such, he was acting Foreign Minister for fifteen days in December 1904.

After the resignation of Boström as a result of the union crisis between Sweden and Norway , Ramstedt was appointed Prime Minister by Oskar II on April 13, 1905 . Its primary task was to resolve the Union crisis. Together with Crown Prince Gustav , he developed a plan that provided for Norway to leave the state union that had existed since the Peace of Kiel on January 14, 1814, without taking into account the interests of the Norwegians and their parliament. However, this plan no longer came about, as the Storting voted to leave the union with Sweden on June 7, 1905. The proposal made by Ramstedt's government to the Reichstag to enter into negotiations on the separation process did not find a majority. The secret committee chaired by Christian Lundeberg , leader of the protectionist faction , rejected the government's request.

This led to the resignation of the Ramstedt government on August 2, 1905, the first complete resignation of a Swedish government since 1809. Ramstedt's successor was Lundeberg.

Later offices

Lundeberg then reinstated Ramstedt in his old office as chief judge. In 1909 he was appointed by Prime Minister Arvid Lindman as judge at the newly created Supreme Administrative Court ( regeringsrätten ). In 1912 he was finally appointed Supreme Governor ( överståthållare ) of Stockholm Province by Prime Minister Karl Staaff . He held this office until his retirement in 1920.
