Christian Lundeberg (born July 14, 1842 in Valbo , † November 10, 1911 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish politician and brief prime minister .

Origin and occupation

The son of a mill owner graduated from the Ultuna Military School . He then served in the army from 1861 to 1874, where he was last promoted to lieutenant . After the end of his military service, he became an employee of the Forsbacka steel works, where he was chairman of the board from 1885 to 1906 .

Member and President of the First Chamber

Lundeberg began his political career in 1885 as a member of the First Chamber of the Reichstag , in which he became chairman of the conservative and protectionist faction in 1899 . In this capacity he was one of the leading politicians during the so-called union crisis between Sweden and Norway . In particular, as chairman of a secret committee, he played a key role in the resignation of Johan Ramstedt's government . Between 1899 and 1905 and again from 1906 to 1908 he was Deputy President of the First Reichstag Chamber. From 1909 until his death he was President of the First Chamber of the Reichstag .

Prime Minister 1905

Oskar II appointed him Prime Minister on August 2, 1905. He formed a coalition government that had to reach an agreement with Norway. Norway was finally allowed to hold a referendum on independence from Sweden, provided that the Norwegian Parliament Storting withdrew the declaration of independence made on June 7, 1905. The Norwegian referendum of August 13, 1905, with 99.5 percent of the votes, confirmed the dissolution of the union with Sweden.

After the Union crisis was resolved, Lundeberg tried in vain to find a sufficient majority to continue his coalition government, in particular to address the open question of electoral law . After not finding sufficient support, he resigned on November 8, 1905.
